Abstract—The performance of the ecosystem and biospheric functions of soils is mainly controlled by the
dynamics of soil organic matter. The presence of feedback relationships, which are associated with biota activ
ity in the ecosystem, governs the rate of decomposition of organic matter in compliance with the rate of cycling
of biophilous elements. A number of peculiar features of pedogenesis enable us to consider soil a self-organiz
ing and self-regulating subsystem of biogeocenosis.
