Abstract—A conceptual model of humification is proposed. Optimal and limiting factors and conditions of
detritus formation and interaction with the mineral part of soil are determined. The model suggests a conjugated
analysis of humification conditions and the humus state of soils and allows one to describe the process of humus
accumulation and qualitative composition of humus. Humus content and composition in zonal soils are deter
mined mainly by conditions of humus fixation. An index of humus accumulation in soils per unit mass of humus
sources is proposed for the quantitative assessment of the efficiency of humus accumulation.
