AbstractThe thermal-deformation and structuralmorphological features of composites in the form of plas-
tics and fibers spun from a homogeneous mixture of polysulfone and rigid-chain poly(amidobenzimidazole) in
a common solvent were studied using thermomechanical analysis, IR polarization spectroscopy, and optical
microscopy techniques. Composite fibers containing up to 10 wt % poly(amidobenzimidazole) are two-phase
colloidal disperse systems of the matrix type, where particles of the birefringent highly oriented poly(amido-
benzimidazole) phase are dispersed in an isotropic polysulfone matrix. Fibers containing more than 10 wt %
poly(amidobenzimidazole) possess a fibrillar matrix structure and thermomechanical properties close to those
properties of SVM fibers. When more than 40 wt % of poly(amidobenzimidazole) is introduced into the blend,
phase inversion takes place and the polysulfone passes into a low-oriented dispersed phase. Poly(amidobenz-
imidazole) added to polysulfone significantly elevates the heat deflection temperature of organoplastics made
of consolidated fibers because of the formation of a heat-resistant structural framework.
