Abstract—The diffraction lines of retained austenite in X-ray diffraction patterns of quenched plain carbon
steels were found to have a triplet nature. This is a result of transformation of the face-centered cubic lattice of
austenite to a face-centered orthorhombic lattice upon martensitic transformation in the steels under the effect
of deformation factors and partial redistribution of carbon. The orthorhombic lattice of retained austenite
remains stable as long as the coherency is retained between the phases.
