Abstract—The structure of cementite in carbon steels (0.89 and 1.5% C) with pearlite microstructure was stud-
ied using Mössbauer spectroscopy. Mössbauer spectra of cementite are found to be significantly affected by
changes in heat-treatment conditions, suggesting that the structure of cementite is changed during annealings,
presumably, because of a rearrangement of its carbon sublattice. The results obtained agree with our previous
conclusion [9] that the cementite structure belongs to a less symmetric space group than the commonly accepted
(Pnma) one.
