AbstractThe ratio between the glass transition temperature and the elastic modulus Tg/E for vitreous systems
of identical structural types is a constant and is primarily determined by the limiting root-mean-square displace-
ment
of a kinetic unit from the center of a cell. An idea is developed that, at the softening temperature,
the mean potential energy of the ultimate elastic strain of an interatomic bond is equal to the mean energy of
thermal motion of kinetic units (atoms or groups of atoms) responsible for the glass transition.
