AbstractReversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP HPLC) was used to study the chro-
matographic characteristic of adamantane and some of its hydroxyl-, bromine-, and alkyl-substituted deriva-
tives. The effect of the nature, number, and positions of the substituents on the chromatographic-retention char-
acteristics was examined. The obtained data on the retentionstructure correlation make it possible to predict
the RP HPLC properties of other members of compounds of this class. The retention of the adamantane deriv-
ative studied can be described within the framework of the solvophobic theory of RP HPLC. The retention of
hydroxyl- and bromine-substituted derivatives is controlled by the state of the hydrophilic moiety of the mole-
cule, whereas the retention of alkyl-substituted derivatives is determined by their hydrophobic properties. It was
demonstrated that RP HPLC on
18-modified columns exhibits a high selectivity with respect to the compounds
under study and can be recommended for purification control and quantitative identification of adamantane
derivatives in complex synthetic mixtures.
