Homogeneous Nucleation in Vapor with Nonspherical Clusters

Abstract—Stationary nucleation in supersaturated vapor is considered in the case when the equilibrium shape
of cluster nuclei of the liquid phase is nonspherical. An equation for the chemical potential of a cluster of sphe-
roidal shape is obtained. From this equation, it follows that, with increasing deformation, the surface energy of
the cluster increases faster than the area of its surface. The calculated values of the rate of nucleation in cesium
vapor are lower than the classical theory predicts, which qualitatively corresponds to experiment.
