AbstractThe behavior of a half-space system composed of a liquid metal and solid metal nuclei during a
sharp decrease in temperature was examined. Approximate theoretical estimates of the maximum radius of the
crystallites and the position of the maximum of the concentration of the solid-phase metal were made. Based
on a numerical solution of the evolution equations of the system, it was demonstrated that the final distribution
of the mass density of the metal is a
-shaped step located at a finite distance from the solidliquid interface.
