AbstractA thermodynamic approach to the derivation of equations of state was developed on the basis of a
statistical mechanics interpretation of the chemical potential and the consideration of the excluded volume. A
universal differential equation of state was obtained in terms of the excluded volume. Partial solutions to this
equation in the zero and first approximations correspond to the Planck and van der Waals equations of state.
The second approximation leads to a new highly accurate equation of state, which covers a much wider range
of states. In this case, the equation, like the Planck and van der Waals equations, has a very simple form.
