AbstractAsymptotic methods are used to construct a solution to the problem of flow formation at a pulsed
onset of motion of a circular cylinder in a linearly stratified fluid. The effects of viscosity and diffusion are taken
into account. A shadow pattern of the flow was observed experimentally, and profiles of the horizontal velocity
upstream of an obstacle were measured by the method of optical markers. The calculated sizes and other param-
eters of the region of fluid blocking upstream of the obstacle are in agreement with measurements taken at times
significantly greater than the time limiting the validity of the method.
