Interrelation between the Microwave Radiation
of the Oceanframe0Atmosphere System and the Boundary Heat
and Momentum Fluxes

Abstract—The natural radiation (brightness temperature) of the ocean–atmosphere system in the millimeter
and centimeter ranges of the microwave spectral region is calculated from direct meteorological and aerological
measurements performed aboard the weather research vessels (WRV) V. Bugaev, Musson, and Volna during the
stationary phase of the ATLANTEX-90 experiment (April 4–21, 1990). The calculated results are validated by
a comparison with the data measured from the F-08 meteorological satellite (DMSP) using the SSM/I micro-
wave radiometer. The interrelation between the brightness temperatures (calculated and measured) and the ver-
tical turbulent heat and momentum fluxes at the ocean–atmosphere interface on synoptic time scales is ana-
lyzed. A comparison of the total heat and momentum fluxes with the satellite estimates from data measured with
the SSM/I radiometer was carried out and showed that the correlation coefficients between the heat fluxes and
their estimates are as high as R = 0.85 (WRV V. Bugaev), R = 0.73 (WRV Musson), and R = 0.84 (WRV Volna);
and the corresponding correlation coefficients for the momentum fluxes measure 0.87, 0.81, and 0.84.
