Some Results of Long-Term Ozone Observations
at the St. Petersburg Voeikovo Station

Abstract—Brief information on the start of ground-based observations of the total ozone content (TOC) at the
St. Petersburg Voeikovo station is presented. Regular TOC observations were begun in 1956 and are being con-
tinued up to now. Some data on the measuring and standard ozonometric instruments used in St. Petersburg
from 1956 to 1997 are given. Monthly and yearly mean TOC values and characteristics of their variations over
the period 1956–1997 are listed. It is pointed out that, since 1981, an average annual decrease of 0.9% has been
observed in the yearly mean TOC. Monthly mean TOC values computed from the Voeikovo ground-based data
and the American satellite (TOMS) data measured in the Voeikovo region are compared over the period from
November 1978 to January 1992. A reasonably close agreement between these sets of data is noticed; more
often than not, the discrepancy was within 1%, and it was only 3.8% in November.
