AbstractReliable recording of acoustic signals from ground explosions in acoustic shadow regions is exper
imentally demonstrated. The results obtained suggest that anisotropic structures of the effective acoustic speed
field, which are characterized by intense turbulence during all seasons, exist in the middle atmosphere. Such
structures occupy the whole stratospheric thickness. In the mesosphere, the presence of an isolated layer with
intense turbulence is possible. The results of this work may serve as the experimental basis for the development
of a method for acoustic sounding of turbulence in the middle atmosphere.
