2. Comparison of the Observational Results
with Independent Data

Abstract—Examples of comparisons of vertical ozone profiles determined in a series of space experiments
conducted on the Priroda module of the Mir space station with independent data are presented. The Ozon–Mir
spectrometer, which measured solar radiation absorption along tangent paths in the UV and visible spectral
regions, was used in the experiments. A good agreement with the HALOE data is demonstrated, as a rule, within
the total errors of the two instruments (10–20%). The exception is a pressure range in the vicinity of 3 mb,
where distinctions run to 20–30%. The comparison of ozone content data obtained with the Ozon–Mir and MLS
instruments in three space experiments shows that these independent observational data correlate very well. The
standard deviations usually range from 5 to 15%, and, at the majority of height levels, they do not exceed the
sum of the errors of these two instruments. Systematic differences between the ozone readings of the two instru-
ments vary from 10 to 30% and change sign depending on height.
