Abstract—A model is constructed for the edge of an ice field under a horizontal load. The model takes into
account the self-oscillating character of edge motion and the viscous properties of both ice and a water + brash
ice medium. Relations between the force leading to hummocking (or the corresponding velocity of relative
motion of the ice field and an obstacle) and the mechanical and geometrical parameters of the field are obtained.
