Selected Issues of the Cenozoic Paleoecology
of the Nannoplankton of the Southern Ocean

Abstract—Paleoecological investigations showed that the largest and most massive representatives of the Cen-
ozoic nannoflora are related to the quietest and warmest oceanic environments. The evolution of selected spe-
cies and genera clearly reflects their dependence on the gradual surface temperature decrease and on the com-
mon environment deterioration during the Cenozoic. The total abundance of nannoplankton decreases together
with the species diversity of genera; morphological changes occur related to the lightening of skeletons with
the decrease in the sizes and densities of individuals.
