AbstractThe distribution of meso- and macroplankton in the shelf waters (down to a depth of 1000 m) in the
area of Golubaya Bight (Gelendzhik, the northeastern part of the Black Sea) is discussed. Observations were
carried out during the period from August to September 2003 both in the bight proper and over off-shore
transects. The change in the community structure as compared to the foregoing years, which were warmer, and
the impact of short-term wind-induced onset and offset events are analyzed. Lower biomasses of selected
groups of zooplankton were noted as compared with 2002. The most pronounced changes were recognized in
the biomass of the fine filter-feeders, namely, of the representatives of Cladocera and Appendicularia and car-
nivorous ctenophores such as Mnemiopsis and Beroe. In 2003, reproduction of Beroe was suppressed. The
growth rate of the Aurelia changed. Strong storms and related upwellings of cold waters in the shelf zone
affected the structure of the plankton community for a week.
