Analysis of Interannual Variations
of the Surface Chlorophyll Concentration
in the Black Sea from the Data of an CZCS Radiometer

Abstract—The interannual variations of the surface plant pigment concentration measured by an CSCZ radi-
ometer from 1978–1986 are analyzed in different regions of the Black Sea. This index seems to correlate with
cyclic oscillations of winter air temperature; in the western shallow regions, it is also correlated with the Danube
discharge intensity. More intensive winter–spring blooms and a slightly lower level of pigment concentration
during the warm season are typical of the years with a mild winter. The peculiarities of the hydrological regime
of the Black Sea seem to be the reason for these regularities.
