AbstractThe interannual variations of the surface plant pigment concentration measured by an CSCZ radi-
ometer from 19781986 are analyzed in different regions of the Black Sea. This index seems to correlate with
cyclic oscillations of winter air temperature; in the western shallow regions, it is also correlated with the Danube
discharge intensity. More intensive winterspring blooms and a slightly lower level of pigment concentration
during the warm season are typical of the years with a mild winter. The peculiarities of the hydrological regime
of the Black Sea seem to be the reason for these regularities.
