Amount and Biochemical Composition
of Organic Matter in Kandalaksha Bay

Abstract—Data on the distribution of suspended and dissolved organic matter (OM) and their major biochem-
ical components (hydrocarbons, proteins, and lipids) are presented for the coastal and deep-water regions of
Kandalaksha Bay. The maximum concentrations of dissolved OM (up to 22.6 mg/l) characterize deep waters,
while those of suspended OM (above 0.4 mg/l) prevail in the coastal waters, in particular, in mussel farms. The
major biochemical components of dissolved OM are hydrocarbons (up to 30%), while those of suspended OM
are proteins and hydrocarbons. The level of primary production, the intensity of continental runoff, and the
intensity of water exchange at the inlet determine the distribution and biochemical composition of OM in the
White Sea.
