Laboratory Modeling of Water Exchange through Sea Straits

Abstract—The results of a laboratory study of water exchange through narrow straits with a two-layered baro-
tropic flow are given. The laboratory facilities involved a tank divided into two basins connected by a shallow
and narrow rectangular channel. One basin was heated at the bottom, while the other was cooled at the top. Mea-
surement results for short, intermediate, and long straits are given for different magnitudes of net barotropic
transport. The interface depths and volumetric discharge measured in the laboratory experiment agree well with
a simple hydraulic model based on the principle of maximum exchange.
