Seasonal and Interannual Variability of the Surface Temperature
in the Caspian Sea

AbstractThe weekly multi-channel sea surface temperature (MCSST) dataset was used to study the seasonal
and interannual variability of the sea surface temperatures (SST) averaged over four regions of the Caspian Sea
separately (North, Middle, and South Caspian, and Kara Bogaz Gol Bay) and their trends in 19822000. It is
likely that the positive trend of the SST distinguished during this period of 0.050.10°C/yr, which was several
times greater than that in 19401980, resulted from the global climate warming. The time correlation of the
winter and summer anomalies of the SST (monthly and seasonal averages) observed in 19502000 (satellite
and published field data) with the phases of the El Ni
oSouthern Oscillation and North Atlantic Oscillation
events demonstrated the influence of the latter events on the interannual and decadal variability of the SST. It
is emphasized that the temperature changes in the Caspian and Black seas in 19822000 were similar in their
general features (positive trends, whose values were close; a minimum of the annual mean SST in 19921993,
the maximal SST in the winter and in the summer of 19981999).
