The Daily Ration and Respiration
of the Copepod Calanus marshallae
off the Saint Paul Island (the Bering Sea)

Abstract—During the spring–summer period in 1993 and 1994, experiments were carried out for the determi-
nation of the daily ration and respiration of Calanus marshallae of different age groups, as part of the Program
for Investigation of the Pribiloff Island Ecosystem in the Bering Sea. The daily ration of copepodites II, III, IV,
V and females were 34.8, 21.4–24.6, 8.8–23.5, 1.7–5.0, and 3.7% of the carbon contents of the body, respec-
tively. Their oxygen consumption rates measured by the electron transport system activity method were 1.4,
3.6–4.3, 8.6–16.6, 10.1–19.2, and 26.4 µl O2/ind/day, respectively. Based on the results obtained, as well as on
the data of copepod numbers, we calculated the quantity of phytoplankton consumption and the daily produc-
tion of the C. marshallae population. The calculations showed that the share of phytoplankton biomass and the
amount consumed daily by the whole population was less than 1.1 and 8%, respectively. The daily production
was 0.7 mg C/m3 in 1993 and 3.52 mg C/m3 in 1994.
