and Protection of Sandy Coasts of the Ocean

Abstract—Analysis of the present-day issues of management of the natural regime of sandy lowlands in the
coastal areas of seas and oceans and their protection against erosion is carried out on the basis of home and
foreign experience. An estimation is made of the efficiency of various means of coastal protection. Attention is
drawn to the following requirements: long-term repeated observations of coastal processes and environmental
conditions at long portions of the coast; application of the regularities obtained to the choice of protection
means; priority use of natural materials; creation of artificial sandy beaches and maintenance of the existing
natural ones, implying possible protective covers of coastal slopes, use of intrinsic protective properties of
coastal dunes, and construction of groins only under specific conditions; modeling of natural processes and
coastal protection activities; elaboration of national strategies of protection of coastal lowlands under the con-
ditions of expected significant sea-level rise.
