AbstractTrophic composition of macrobenthos inhabiting a region 2600 km2 in area in a depth range of 1380
to 1978 m was explored in the Norwegian Sea wit trawl and grab sampling. Four trophic zones 1530 km wide
were revealed separated by the 1600-m isobath and the near-bottom turbidity contour line of 900 conventional
light-scattering units. They are the zones of detritophages, detritophages + carnivores, sestonophages + carni-
vores, and sestonophages. These zones differ in composition of the leading forms. Common species of carniv-
orous animals vary in food composition.
