Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages of the Southeastern Sea
of Okhotsk during the Latest Glaciation

Abstract—A comparative analysis of the benthic foraminiferal asemblages in of the latest glaciation, obtained
by a gravity core sampler in the area of the southeastern Kamchatka slope (site V34-98, 550frame006.6 N, 153frame112.0 E,
sea depth 1175 m) and on the southern slope of the Akademiya Nauk Rise in the central Sea of Okhotsk (site
V34-90, 48frame249.9 N, 150frame327.6 E, sea depth 1590 m), was made. It revealed that, along with their doubtless sim-
ilarity, they were also characterized by appreciable differences, which were caused by the features of the hydro-
logical regime in these areas during the period considered. It is shown that, during the glaciation, the near-bot-
tom waters off the northern Kuril Islands were warmer and aerated worse than those in the Akademiya Nauk
Rise area. Based on the low-amplitude variations in the proportions of the predominant species, the hydrolog-
ical conditions in the near-bottom waters of the Akademiya Nauk Rise during the glaciation were relatively
more stable in comparison with the area adjacent to the Kuril Islands.
