Studies of the Features of Detachment of Particles
with Shifted Centers of Mass

Abstract—This paper presents the results of the experimental studies of particle detachment in a water flow.
The main objective was the study of the mechanism of the particle detachment from the bed implemented
through particle turnover. Artificial roughness was used in order to eliminate the interaction between the moving
and resting particles and to provide identical hydrodynamic characteristics of the flow over the bed area studied.
The use of artificial particles with shifted centers of mass having the same size, mass, and hydrodynamic drag,
but different detachment resistance, gave us the possibility to examine some aspects of the particle detachment
mechanics. The data obtained demonstrated that, in addition to the excess of the sum of the tilting moments
over the holding moment, the particle turnover also requires a value of the flow velocity sufficient to perform
the work of raising the particle mass center to the height required for the turnover.
