AbstractThe problem of estimating the concentration of suspended sediments of inhomogeneous composi-
tion at a certain near-bottom level is formulated. The position of the level is related to the characteristics of the
flow and the particles. The cases of particle entrainment from a flat or ripple-covered floor by the action of a
current, waves, or coupled action of waves and fair current are considered. It is assumed that the field of con-
centration of a sediment of inhomogeneous composition may be represented as a sum of fields of homogeneous
particle fractions whose motions obey uniform generalities. The solution is developed on the basis of a vast
database of laboratory and field experiments with the use of concepts on the proportions between the turbulent
energy production and energy flux of the particle settling. As a result, we obtained a relation valid for all the
cases assessed, in which the effective value of the bottom friction velocity is used as one of the arguments. For
the same cases, ways to estimate its value are found. In the process of solution, a simplified technique for cal-
culations of the parameters of the ripples formed under the coupled action of waves and currents has been elab-
orated.
