Abstract—Physical–chemical modeling of the process of formation of a geochemical barrier while mixing the
waters of various origins (riverine and marine) was performed with the use of the formalism of chemical ther-
modynamics. As a result, sharp changes in the pH, Eh, ionic strength, and mineralization values were simulated,
which may be regarded as a geochemical barrier. The geochemical barrier obtained in the simulations is only
controlled by physical–chemical factors (since the modeling itself is based on the laws of chemical thermody-
namics) related to the chemical processes going on in the solution. It is suggested that, under natural conditions,
the formation of the geochemical barrier in a mixing zone is mostly caused by physical–chemical reasons.
