Small-Scale Turbulence in the Cross Sections
of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

AbstractOn January 1215 and February 1826, 1983, hydrological surveys for studying the structure of the
Antarctic circumpolar current were carried out over a polygon centered at 44° S and 70° E. The program of the
surveys included measurements of the vertical profiles of temperature, salinity, density, and BruntVäsälä fre-
quency, as well as the vertical gradients of current velocity in the water layers mainly 15 m thick with the use
of autonomous mooring stations. The probabilities of generation of small-scale turbulence in the depth range
from 30 to 500 m calculated from the data of the surveys and contour lines of these probabilities were plotted
in seven cross sections of the current. Distribution functions of the number of turbulized layers simultaneously
arranged along the same vertical were calculated in the depth range from 30 to 500 m.
