Hydrochemical Bottom Station for Registration
of Short-Term Forerunners of Sea Earthquakes

Abstract—The results of the development and field tests of a hydrochemical autonomous bottom station for
registration of short-term forerunners of earthquakes are described. The station was developed at the Shirshov
Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, by order of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the
Russian Federation. The tests and experimental operation of the station were performed in the seismically active
zone off the Kamchatka Peninsula. The station consists of transducers for measuring a series of hydrochemical
and hydrophysical parameters, an acoustic–optical spectral analyzer of the visible wave range, a controlling
computer, and a radio communication and operating channel with a coastal unit for data reception. The opera-
tion potentialities of the station allow one to apply it in the systems of the ecological monitoring of the environ-
ment.
