Seamounts of the Indian Ocean: Peculiarities of Distribution
and Correlation with the Age of the Lithosphere

Abstract—The data on more than 1600 volcanic seamounts of the Indian Ocean exceeding 1 km in height were
collected and generalized. A statistical analysis of the morphometric parameters of these seamounts was carried
out. A map of the heights of the seamounts on the oceanic crust of the Indian Ocean was compiled. The areas
occupied by the crust of various age, density of seamount distribution over the oceanic crust, volumes of vol-
canic rocks of the seamounts, the total volume of volcanic rocks of the seamounts of the Indian Ocean, and other
parameters were calculated. Considering the complex structure of the ocean floor, a similar analysis was carried
out for the individual regions of the ocean and the area of the mid-oceanic rise. Correlation of the heights of the
seamounts, the density of their distribution, and the total volume of volcanic rocks with the age of the oceanic
crust was established. The total volume of volcanic rocks of the seamounts of the Indian Ocean comprises
1.1million km3. Histograms of the distribution of the seamounts, the map of the seamounts, and the table with
the main parameters are presented.
