Acoustic Bottom Profiler with a Differential Output Receiver

Abstract—A special amplifier used in an acoustic profiler with an operating frequency of 5 kHz was developed
at the Laboratory of Bottom Hydrolocation of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sci-
ences. The differential output involves two circuits, which filter the envelope of the echo-signal within different
frequency bands, and a subtraction device. This solution for amplifier circuitry makes it possible to substantially
improve the signal-to-noise ratio while profiling bottom sediments in shallow waters. The results of the exper-
iment obtained with the new amplifier and tests concerning detection of a test object buried in sandy ground are
given.
