AbstractConcepts of side-scan sonar (SSS) modifications for shallow water are proposed that address topi-
cal questions in the context of complex studies of sea shelf and inland waters. Theoretical and experimental
results are given concerning SSS interferometric mode performance in bathymetric research and in localization
and identification of bottom objects. A technique has been developed for bathymetry evaluation and improve-
ment in localization and identification of bottom objects. The concept of SSS modification was tested under
natural conditions in reservoirs, and the obtained results corroborated its efficiency and adequacy. Evaluations
of bathymetry of coastal zones of inland waters were performed, and near-shore shoals and underwater rises
were revealed, which are of importance for supporting navigation.
