History of Hydrothermal Activity at the East Pacific Rise
between 5frame0S and 12frame1N for the Past 18 My

Abstract—Chemical composition of the bottom sediments obtained during Leg 138 of the Ocean Drilling Pro-
gram was studied. Metalliferous sediments from the East Pacific Rise have lower average contents of Fe, Mn,
Cu, Zn, and Ni, and higher average contents of Al and Ti as compared with the average contents of the metal-
liferous sediments of the Pacific Ocean. An attempt was made to study the spatial and temporal evolution of
hydrothermal activity at the axis of the East Pacific Rise between 5°S and 12°N using the estimates of the rates
of accumulation of hydrothermal iron in the sediments during the past 18 My.
