Influence of Water Circulation on Productivity of Generations
of Anchovy in the Western Part of the Black Sea

Abstract—The distribution of spawn and young of anchovy in the field of hydrophysical values in the western
part of the Black Sea was studied from 1989 to 1991. The role of fronts and water circulation in the development
of productivity of the Black Sea anchovy was revealed. The distribution of the spawn and young of anchovy in
the field of currents illustrates that they gravitate to the zones of convergence and to the periphery of eddies. In
the field of horizontal gradients of water density within the 0- to 20-m layer, the maximum catches of the spawn
of anchovy were distributed randomly; the young were concentrated in the zones of the maximum gradient val-
ues. The maximum concentrations of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi also occur in these zones; they evi-
dently influenced the productivity of the anchovy during the years of the outburst of the ctenophore. The most
favorable conditions for development of a highly productive generation of anchovy occur when the Dniester–
Danube frontal zone is located in its westernmost position and is steady throughout the summer; this results
from the pattern of water circulation. In the Black Sea, the currents depend on the zonal atmospheric transfer
over the sea during spring and summer; thus, a stable eastward transfer seems to be a favorable premise and
enables the forecast of the productivity of the Black Sea anchovy in advance for 4–5 months.
