Phytoplankton in the Baltic Sea in Summer 1995

Abstract—During a cruise of R/V Professor Ligachev (May 31–June 30, 1995), phytoplankton samples were
collected by bottle samplers both from the surface and from various depths. In the Gulf of Finland, the mass
development of small diatoms and larger dinoflagellates (Peridinella catenata) was observed. In the open Baltic
south of Gotland, phytoplankton was already in the summer phase of succession. Large dinoflagellates (genus
Dinophysis) dominated, whereas diatom populations were scarce (3%). In the Gulf of Finland, the average con-
centration of phytoplankton cells and the value of biomass reached 3 10⁶ cells/l and 10 g/m³, while in the open
Baltic, the concentration and biomass were 250 000 cells/l and 5.8 g/m³, which was much higher than in previ-
ous years.
