AbstractIn this paper, a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the propagation of a hydraulic jump along a
bottom irregularity is presented. This phenomenon has been poorly studied. Experiments to investigate the form
and scales of the distortions of the fronts of hydraulic jumps over a bottom irregularity were performed in a
laboratory unit. A theoretical model was contrived, which allows one to make estimates of the size of the tongue
in the hydraulic jump over an irregularity depending on the parameters of the obstacle and speed of the wave.
The calculations of the size of the tongue agree with the experimental results provided the Froude numbers are
moderate.
