Abstract—Estimates of the parameters of vertical distributions of the current velocity gradients, probability of
generation of the small-scale turbulence and its energy levels, as well as the Richardson numbers, indicating
shear instability of the current velocity in the near-surface layers, are obtained from the current velocity mea-
surements for the layers from 6–8 to 50 m in depth in four regions of the southern part of the Baltic Sea.
