Regional Variability of the Sound Field Temporal Structure
in the Underwater Sound Channel

AbstractThe materials of a series of experiments on long-range propagation of explosion signals are ana-
lyzed in order to distinguish regional features of formation of the temporal structure of the sound field in the
underwater sound channel. Within a broad range of signal spreading times, their regional distinctions are rec-
ognized as being caused by the multiray mode of propagation. In order to analyze the materials comparatively,
we used the tR diagrams introduced by Ewing and Worzel reduced to a single curve. While approximating
this curve by a power-law function, we observed significant changes in the exponent value from one region to
another (from 1.7 for the Black Sea to 6.3 for the Philippine Sea). An analysis of the dispersion pattern suggests
that, depending on the region, the termination of a signal may feature either a high-frequency or a low-fre-
quency appearance. In a few regions, virtually no dispersion is observed at all. The results of the analysis of the
experimental data are in a good agreement with calculations.
