Kinematic Characteristics of an Internal Wave Field
in the Gotland Deep in the Baltic Sea

Abstract—A region of the Gotland Deep in the Baltic Sea, where intrusive lenses are frequently observed, is
studied. The data of vertical profiling of temperature and salinity, obtained during cruise 39 of R/V A. Weimer
(December 1990), were used to evaluate kinematic characteristics of the first internal wave mode. The velocity
of long internal wave propagation and dispersion and nonlinear coefficients were calculated, which were used
as input parameters for the theoretical model of internal waves, based on the Korteweg–de Vries equation. The
spatial variability of kinematic characteristics of internal waves were studied. It was shown that linear parame-
ters of internal waves may be described by the universal functions of the basin depth in the region. It was found
that the nonlinear parameter changes sign in the depth interval between 160 and 200 m. The intrusive lens has
a minor influence on the kinematic characteristic of long waves.
