Self-Contained Nephelometer for Sedimentological Studies

Abstract—A self-contained nephelometer is designed to operate together with sediment traps and may also be
used for other purposes. The instrument consists of a sensor, microprocessor controller, and battery set arranged
inside two housings, and of a cable connecting them to a buoy with an FM radio transmitter. The major units
of the instrument, its operation, and features as well as real capabilities of the instrument are presented. An
example of a week-long temporal trend in light scattering intensity recorded by the instrument is considered.
