Design Optimization of a Microwave Moisture Gage for Use
with Sea Bottom Sediments

Abstract—Design of a new microwave moisture gage is described. It is intended for measuring moisture con-
tent in the sea bottom sediment samples collected with samplers of arbitrary type. The instrument involves a
sensor comprising an open wave guide resonator, a message–reception module with a strip-line microwave tran-
sistor oscillator stabilized by a dielectric resonator, and a data processing unit involving ADC, a microprocessor
with RAM and ROM, and a four-digit indicator. The gage can be interfaced to the PC through a standard
RSframe0232 port. Techniques of calibration and measurements are given. Results of joint tests performed in 1994
are discussed.
