Abstract—The results of underwater observations performed by the author in the first half of August 2000 are
presented. The dives were carried out near Golubaya Bay at depths of 0–20 m and during a cruise on board
R/VKvant within the 0- to 20-m layer over sea depths of 20–120 m in Golubaya Bay. Two medusa species
(Aurelia aurita and Rhizostoma pulmo) and the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi were dominant. Changes in the
size structure of the near-shore populations over the period of the studies were followed, and the microzonality
in the horizontal distribution of the gelationous macroplankton was described. Daily vertical migrations of the
ctenophore M. leidyi and medusa Rh. pulmo were discovered. The possible adaptive significance of these migra-
tions is discussed.
