Abstract—The distribution of water masses in the Equatorial Atlantic is analyzed on the basis of the data of a
transatlantic hydrographic section made in July 2000, approximately along 5frame030 N, during cruise 8 of
R/VAkademik Ioffe. Significant thickening and upwelling of the Antarctic Intermediate Water is observed in
the western part of the section. A cooling of the Antarctic Bottom Water as compared to the measurements made
within the International Geophysical Year (1957) and WOCE (1993) programs was found.
