Facial Variability of Benthic Foraminiferal Communities
of the Open Regions of the Ocean

Abstract—Large-scale changes in the communities of benthic foraminifera were studied in the geological test
areas of the open regions of the tropical parts of the Pacific and Indian oceans within a depth interval of 2780–
5830 m. The communities were distinguished and named after the dominant species. Their confinement to cer-
tain features of the bottom topography, lithofacies, and water masses was established. Relative distribution of
the foraminiferal communities depends on the topography of the boundaries of water masses, productivity of
carbonate plankton, and saturation of the near-bottom water with CaCO3.
