Abstract—The scattering of reactor antineutrinos by electrons is considered as a tool that can be used in
searches for the neutrino magnetic moment. Special attention is given to the region of low energies of recoil
electrons. It is shown that the binding of electrons in an atom substantially affects the cross section for frame0
scattering. A simple method for evaluating relevant corrections to the spectra of recoil electrons from reactor-
antineutrino scattering by free electrons is proposed. The counting rates for recoil electrons are estimated for
experiments at existing reactors. Advances made in low-background detection of small energy depositions are
surveyed.
