Abstract—The reaction 12C(, p) with a residual nucleus in an excited J = 1/2frame2 state is investigated in a gauge-
invariant approach employing an exactly conserved nuclear current. The investigation is performed in the pole
approximation. The results agree satisfactorily with available experimental data, the deviation from them
decreasing monotonically as the photon energy is increased. The role of final-state interaction in the virtual
decay 12C frame3 p + 11B* from the 1S0 and 3P0 states of the initial nucleus is demonstrated on the basis of the
Findlay–Owens method. The vertex functions of this virtual decay are calculated in terms of the overlap inte-
grals of the Hartree–Fock wave functions of the 12C and 11B* nuclei for the Skyrme–Tondeur forces, which
reproduce well the static features of the 12C nucleus. A multipole analysis of the reaction under investigation is
performed, and the leading multipole amplitudes are determined.
