Abstract—Band-shift assay reveals a telomeric factor in crude protein extracts of fission yeast Schizosaccha-
romyces pombe
. This factor (SpTBP) specifically binds double-stranded DNA of the telomeric repeats of this
species; has lower and sequence-independent affinity to single-stranded DNA, and does not bind RNA. The bio-
chemical properties of SpTBP are discussed in the context of the authors' and literature data.

Key words: telomere; DNA–protein interaction; gel retardation assay
