AbstractSequencing and computer analysis of the variable left-hand region (52,283 bp) of the cowpox virus
genome, strain GRI-90, were performed. Fifty one potential open reading frames were identified. The
sequenced region was compared with the analogous regions of vaccinia virus (strains Copenhagen and Western
Reserve) and smallpox virus (strains India-1967, Bangladesh-1975, and Garcia-1966). Within the region exam-
ined, a long sequence (over 14 kbp) was identified which is unique for cowpox virus. Multiple differences were
revealed between the homologous genome regions of cowpox virus and the above orthopoxviruses. Intra- and
interspecific homology of open reading frames is discussed, as well as the evolutionary relationships between
the orthopoxviruses studied.
Key words: orthopoxviruses, cowpox virus, smallpox virus, vaccinia virus, genome
